Trade the cobbles for an e-bike and discover the Bruges most visitors miss. We'll glide past three storybook castles and along a beautiful canal to medieval Damme, the city's long-lost sea harbour.
There's a whole other side to Bruges that most visitors never see — and the best way to reach it is on two wheels. My Castles & Canals Bike Tour takes you out of the busy centre and into the quiet green countryside on a comfortable e-bike, so the riding stays effortless and you can simply soak it all in. We'll cruise along the Damse Vaart, a super romantic canal framed by century-old poplars that's been called one of the most beautiful stretches of nature in all of Belgium. Napoleon himself ordered it dug — I'll tell you why it never quite went to plan. Along the way we'll pass three very different castles, each with a story I can't wait to share, before rolling into Damme: a perfectly preserved medieval town that was once the bustling sea harbour of Bruges. We'll leave the bikes to explore on foot here. As your guide and a life-long local, I'll give you so much more than a list of dates — the legends, the scandals, the counts and bishops, and the little secrets you won't find in any guidebook. It's relaxed, it's private, and it moves entirely at your pace.
A very romantic canal lined with poplars over a century old: herons, open polders, and barely a tourist in sight. There's a reason Napoleon wanted it here, and a reason it never reached the sea he intended.
A storybook castle with turrets and pointed arches… that's barely a hundred years old. Looks really can be deceiving here. Come find out the true story hiding behind the "medieval" walls.
It looks modest today, but this was once the home of the Counts of Flanders. A daughter born inside these walls married a Duke of Burgundy — and that single wedding changed the course of Bruges' history forever. I'll explain exactly how.
Our turning point, where we'll explore on foot: the Gothic city hall, the great church, and the market square of a town frozen in the Middle Ages. Look closely and you'll spot the star-shaped ramparts that once made Damme a frontier fortress against the armies of Louis XIV — the War of the Spanish Succession is one of my favourite stories to tell right here.
Standing on Damme's star-shaped ramparts, I'll bring to life the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) — the moment these quiet earthworks turned a sleepy medieval town into a frontier fortress holding the line against the armies of Louis XIV. I'll explain how Bruges' peaceful back garden became a chess piece in a war that reshaped all of Europe, and why it's one of my favourite stories to tell right here.
